The Chemical Industry

Level measurement devices installed within applications in the chemical industry are exposed to aggressive, adhesive, abrasive and/or corrosive media.  Also the requirements can demand that very light bulk goods are to be detected and measured accurately.  With innovative measurement technology from UWT in conjunction with a high sensitivity of the measuring device, the solution is clear.  We also pay particularly close attention to the aspect of process safety within chemical plants.

The challenge

A company in Italy required a reliable limit switch for their cyclone application handling calcium carbonate. Due to the very dusty environment great importance was placed on the reliability of the limit switch and on a high specification of the process seal.

Our solution

The ROTONIVO RN3001 paddle switch meets all the above requirements. Due to the high build quality of the switch we can not only guarantee an accurate limit measurement, but also that the units are fitted with a high specification seal (PTFE-seal). With these quality characteristics, the RN 3001 series is perfect for this kind of application.

The challenge

Our customer required a reliable solution to monitor the material level of his silos to avoid overfilling. A limit switch which switches off with 100% reliability when full was the customer's main priority.

Our solution

A CAPANIVO CN4020 was used as empty sensor within the calcium carbonate filled silo. The CN4030 with a 1000mm long shaft was installed as full level sensor safeguarding the silo against overfilling. The sensors do not have any mechanical parts. The housing is built to IP66 safety standard and the shaft is made from robust PPS plastic thus making the Capanivo a perfect solution for this application.

The challenge

Our customer required to continuously measure salt levels in a salt water deposit silo. The challenge was to find a measurement technology that could withstand the aggressive salt water conditions and provide accurate measurement information.

Our solution

Using UWT´s specially modified lot NB 3300 for interface measurement, the required measurement accuracy and resistance to salt water corrosion can be achieved. By adjusting the weight so that it sits exactly on the salt interface, it is possible to measure to approximately 1cm accuracy. To ensure a high resistance to the aggressive medium, salt, all parts used in the measuring process are either specially coated or made from synthetic material.

The challenge

Our customer required full detection in a balance tank filled with silicic acid which is part of a conveyor system. It was critical to ensure quick reaction times and thus avoid the blocking of the filter. This application was further complicated by the extremely light material, in this case, a fluid-like silicic acid.

Our solution

UWT´s vibrating fork probe VIBRASIL90 meets these extreme requirements. It registers the level with virtually no time delay and is able to measure the very light interface of the silicic acid during the filling process. The VIBRASIL90 can be easily mounted from outside in a 1 ½“ bush and can register bulk goods with a density of less than 5 g/l.

The challenge

Our customer in Germany has silicic acid in a silo for processing in silicon. The level of the material should be constantly monitored. The challenge is that this application is very dusty and sticky. In addition, the surface density of silicic acid is very light. The company had trialled other measurement equipment without success.

Our solution

The UWT lot NB 3200 meets these extreme requirements. A parachute weight is used which settles on the surface of the silicic acid. The integrated tape cleaner prevents strong contamination of the inner chamber. The SLS3000 provides reliable measurement. Neither the stickiness, nor the dust, nor the light density of the silicic acid cause problems for the UWT SLS3000.

The challenge

Our customer is the market leader for glues, sealant and surface processing for consumers, including the craft industry. They requested a reliable level control for storage silos with glue granulates. The very sticky granulate is stored in tall, narrow silos (ø 3m).

Our solution

UWT Level Control is the leading producer of electromechanical lot systems . With the NIVOBOB NB3200 we could offer a reliable and cost-effective solution. For this application, the nozzle needed to be adjusted so the weight would not stick at the nozzle in its end position. Problem solved!

The challenge

Here, a German company stores silicic acid in silos to be further processed into silicone end products. They requested a continuous level control in their silo. The challenge is the dusty environment and deposit build-up. Plus, the DC value of silicic acid is quite low.

Our solution

The electromechanical system NIVOBOB NB3000 fulfills these extreme requirements. The weight has a folding cover which lies on the surface of the silicic acid during the measurement. The integrated tape cleaner prevents contamination of the interior mechanism. The NB3000 always delivers reliable results. The dusty environment, deposit build-up and the difficult surface of silicic acid are no problem for this lot system from UWT Level Control.

The challenge

Our customer is one of the biggest producers of mineral fertilizers. The company searched for a reliable limit detector for the KCI concentrate, both pre and post drying stages. In the past, they had used radioisotop-sensors but this and all the other measurement principles had failed. The challenge is the high humidity especially in cold seasons, deposit build-up, no further measuring points in the basin and very aggressive steam.

Our solution

The robust design of the ROTONIVO RN3002 rotating paddle switches function well in aggressive environments. These devices are insensitive to deposit build-up and changing material attributes (the humidity before drying is 5 %, afterwards – 0,3 %) and can allow for easy installation.

The challenge

In June 2011, our customer has installed the test unit NIVOBOB NB3200 tape version for continuous level control of PVC resin.

Our solution

The electromechnical system Nivobob has a multilingual menu, including Russian. The unit was easily installed at the top of the 32m high silo and parameterized by the operators. The test lasted for one month. The operators assessed the measuring results and function of the unit on a daily basis. The measuring happened twice a shift. The output signal was done with SPS and visualized via a touch panel in the control cabinet. During the test no failures occurred. No other measuring systems from other suppliers performed as reliably as the NB3300.

The challenge

A client based in Belarus s is one of the biggest companies in the pertrochemistry business, and the only producer of phosphoric mineral fertilizer. They were looking for a full-detection-device for a series of containers filled with nitrogen-phosphor-potassium-fertilizer.

Our solution

The vibrating filling-level limit switch VN2050, with cable extension, was the optimal solution for this challenge. Due to the high sensitivity of its sensor, a reliable function and fast registration, when in contact with the material, is guaranteed.

The challenge

Our customer, a soil processing company, required a reliable low level detection for all dosing tanks, filled with fertilizer. The special challenge herein is that different kinds of fertilizers are being used and they should all be detected properly despite the different material properties.

Our solution

With the UWT level limit sensor of the capacitive series RF3100 this application was solved excellently. Due to the simple construction of the capacitive sensor and its reliability, an optimum outcome could be achieved. The first setting via “push button“ calibration is very easy to accomplish.

The Challenge

Our customer is one of reknowned manufacturer of Napthalene balls in India, required to measure the limit level in liquid Napthanene storage silos. The silo is electrically heated to maintain the melting properties of Napthalene.  However while discharging the process media vast caking take place on the level probe. The challenge was to provide precise measurement under such conditions.
